Aquarius Project: Greenland ROV Survey
This survey was carried out under GREAT (Greenland Spreading Zone: Exploring Extreme Habitats in Arctic Seamounts and Hydrothermal Vents), part of the Aquarius Project. Across the mission we surveyed an underwater volcano (the Caldera), an isolated seamount, two drowned valleys, and a fault line. This page brings it all together: a map of every dive we ran, an interactive 3D model of the ROV, and a gallery of imagery from the dives.
Exploring the Greenland Spreading Zone, the mission ran aboard the Marine Institute research vessel RV Celtic Explorer, together with a team of scientists from the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, with chief scientist Diana Krawczyk. It built a high-resolution picture of the entire Logi Ridge system and its inhabitants, and explored the western side of the Kolbeinsey Ridge axis within Greenland's EEZ.
For this mission the ROV carried a newly integrated instrument skid. Its hydraulic arms collected animals at depth and pushed cores to gather sediment, a Niskin bottle captured water samples, and a temperature sensor supplied by the science team was added to the unit. Two 4K cameras, one facing forward and one facing downward, recorded the seafloor throughout, with paired green lasers for scale.
